LITERACY
Hoke Reading/Literacy Council

Welcome! and thanks for your interest in Hoke Reading/Literacy Council.

Our primary mission is providing basic literacy skills to adults. We do this through one-to-one turoring and small groups. Both these endeavors require trained volunteers. Volunteer tutors represent our greatest need and our strongest link to those we serve.

The Hoke Reading/Literacy Council, a non-proift organization, was established in 1978. Nearly 80% of its funding comes from local sources (, Hoke County, City of Raeford, Friends of Literacy, Fund Raisers, United Way, etc.) This local support, along with our volunteers, gives us the flexibility to meet literacy needs as they are localled identified.

All other activities are designed to support our tutors and adult students. You may choose to become a financial contributor, volunteer at a fund-raiser, office helper, recruiter and/or gate keeper. You may also encourgae others to work toward a solution to adult literacy.

It might interest you to know that North Carolina has nineteen counties with adult illiteracy rates of thirty percent or higher. Hoke County's rate is thirty-four percent. Our neighboring counties (Moore, Cumberland, Scotland, Robeson) are all below the thirty percent rate.

The statistics of "illiteracy" is alarming:
