Your Donations Support Programs and Services in HOKE COUNTY and in North Carolina The American Cancer Society (ACS) offers a wide range of services to help patients and their families cope with the burden of cancer – including programs that pair survivors with patients, provide transportation to treatment, and educate patients about living with cancer. The Society also takes aim at prevention by helping people to quit smoking and advocating for good public health policy. Following is a listing of some of the ACS programs available in our community. Tell-A-Friend – Trained volunteers encourage their friends to get mammograms to screen for breast cancer. Reach to Recovery – A one-to-one peer support program of breast cancer survivors. These volunteers are trained to respond to individuals with a concern about breast cancer, those facing a possible diagnosis of breast cancer, as well as people recently diagnosed who are going through breast. Look Good…Feel Better – This program teaches female cancer patients beauty techniques to enhance their self-image during cancer treatments. Can Cope – A series of educational classes for cancer patients, their families and friends. Doctors, nurses, social workers and other health care professionals provide information about cancer, encouragement and practical hints through presentations and class discussions. Man to Man – A support program in which prostate cancer survivors provide one-on-one support to prostate cancer patients. Patients also can turn to the ACS's Expert Answers bulletin board to ask questions that are answered by medical experts. Road to Recovery – Trained volunteer drivers provide cancer patients with rides to and from treatment. Freshstart – Trained volunteers help others quit smoking. Clean Indoor Air Coalitions – Advocates work with community groups to pass local policies that reduce tobacco use. Tobacco Use Prevention Youth Teams – This program helps youth groups organize and implement effective community advocacy projects. Grassroots Advocacy Network – Advocates call, write, and visit elected officials to educate them about the importance of passing sound cancer control legislation. College Scholarships – Educational scholarships for childhood cancer survivors. Scholarships of $1,000 are awarded toward tuition for childhood cancer survivors who were diagnosed on or before age 21. Candidates may apply at any age. Camp Scholarships – This program is designed to provide youth cancer survivors (ages three to 17) the opportunity to attend one camp of their choice per year. Maximum annual tuition scholarship is $500. Community Development Grants – A grant program designed to financially support community projects that are consistent with cancer control objectives. Grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 are awarded after review and approval by a team that includes ACS volunteers and staff. The dollars raised from the American Cancer Society Relay For Life are used to provide Hope…for the future, Progress…toward a cure, and Answers…to cancer questions and concerns. 82% - Mission-based Activities 17% - Prevention & Education: programs that provide the public and health professionals with information and education to prevent cancer occurrence or to reduce the risk of developing cancer 12% - Patient Services: programs to assist cancer patients and their families to ease the burden of cancer for them 14% - Detection / Treatment: programs that are directed at finding cancer before it is clinically apparent, and provide information and education about cancer treatments for a cure, recurrence, symptom management, and pain control 39% - Research: financial support provided to academic institutions and scientists to seek new knowledge about the causes, prevention, and cure of cancer, and to conduct epidemiological and behavioral studies. 18% - Fundraising, Management and General: programs to secure charitable financial support for the Society's programs, including participation at fundraising events, materials for soliciting donations, maintenance of donor records, and fundraising volunteer recruitment and training; direction of the overall affairs of the Society through executive, financial, and administrative services.
